Capitol Artists' Studio Tour

The 6th Annual Capitol Artists' Studio Tour is coming! Over 150 artists will be opening their studios. We are all within a four-mile radius of the Capitol, so bring out the bikes, tennies, scooters - or cars - and come see your local artists!

"Stitch House" reception

Next Saturday, March 26, I'll be helping host a reception at one of the new living units in the "Stitch House". There are three units, and they are all full of art by local artists. The project is one of the first alley developments in Sacramento's midtown and is well worth a look! Very urban and beautifully appointed. I'll be there from 6-8pm. It fronts on the alley between L and M (Capitol) Streets and 17th and 18th Streets - right across from Old Souls Coffee. In fact, it's looking like my art will be on the walls of Old Souls starting in June. More on that later.....

I've been very fortunate to have my work displayed in several different venues over the past months. But some of that work is coming back to my studio.... That means my studio is a MESS! Luckily, I'm able to use the main walls of the upstairs gallery for this month, but that's just a temporary solution. I need to find my work new homes! So this would be a really good time to pay my studio and the Art Foundry Gallery a visit!!! I'll be there on Second Saturday, March 12, from 6-9pm. 1021 R Street, Second Floor, Sacramento. Or make an appointment.

Starting the New Year with old friends

Last night I gave a presentation about my work to the River City Quilt Guild in Sacramento. It felt like a homecoming. That was the first quilt group I ever joined, and I was very happy to see five members from my smaller quilting group in attendance.

It's done!

Branching Out can currently be seen in my studio. I'll be there this Second Saturday (Dec. 11) from 6-9pm. The collage will soon be heading off to its permanent home, so if you can't come by on Saturday, contact me to make an appointment.

Last weekend was the Capital Area Studio Tours (CAST) here in Sacramento. Over 90 artists participated (including me), and it was a wonderful time! I'm looking towards the second weekend of October now. Besides our monthly Second Saturday event (my studio will be open from 6-9pm on Oct 9), that weekend will mark the opening of the (new and improved) Crocker Art Museum. This major event will be on 10.10.10, and the festivities will go from 10am until 10pm.

I'm aiming to have my current piece, "Branching Out", completed by then.....

Grab a copy of Fiberarts Magazine! The summer issue should be in stores early next week. There are TWO articles about ME! One is written by James Cameron and discusses my foray into abstract collages - and my return to landscapes. The other describes the making of "California Ricelands".

Also - I'm now the featured artist at ParaVi Winery. It's located in Camino (Apple Hill area), and makes incredible wines! They release only four wines each year and sell them only at the winery. My art had its debut on Mother's Day weekend. The winery hosted a gourmet lunch and had a performance by a couple from Cirque du Soleil - in honor of us moms! And the wines! So visit the winery - and tell them how much you love the art!!!!!

California Ricelands was installed last week in the office of Assemblyperson Fiona Ma of San Francisco. The photo shows the collage in its current home, with Fiona Ma and Tim Johnson, President and CEO of the California Rice Commission. During the next year the collage will be displayed in a variety of different venues. I'll keep you posted here as it moves around the Capital.

If you look back at my posting on November 12, 2009 you can see Madison Range in my studio. The collage itself is six feet tall. It was designed to go over the fireplace in a gorgeous Montana home. When you see the scale of the fireplace you can understand the size of the collage. When you sit in front of the fire you will be looking UP at the collage, and it was designed with that in mind. The homeowners sent me these installation photos. I can't wait to go see it for myself!

I'm currently working on a new piece. It's a private commission for a home and is one of my favorite themes - rocks and water. This collage will be different from some of my previous pieces. The clients liked the idea of a bit more color - and after completing "California Ricelands", with its bold oranges and blues - I liked the idea too!

Speaking of "California Ricelands", today I said farewell to that collage. But it had a great send-off. The California Rice Commission hosted a fabulous lunch and reception, including a sushi bar and a sushi-rolling competition, featuring (you guessed it!) premium California rice. It was a lovely event at Sacramento's Sheraton Grand Hotel.

California Ricelands - the video!

California Ricelands, a collage commissioned by the California Rice Commission, will be in my studio for just a couple more weeks. Then it will begin to travel within our state capital. If you want to see it before it leaves my studio, consider dropping by soon. I'll definitely be there on "Second Saturday" - February 13 - from 6-9pm.

California Ricelands Video

"Madison Range" left my studio today. It will be arriving in Montana on Friday. I was sorry to see it go, but am happy it will be installed in its permanent home at the end of this month.

"California Ricelands" is still in my studio, but it will be leaving on Sept. 12. That means it will still be in my studio this weekend for Second Saturday.

Don't forget - on the Second Saturday of every month I have an Open Studio from 6-9pm. I hope to see you there! And you can see the new work I'm just starting.....

California Ricelands is done!

Yea! It's done - I have completed California Ricelands. You may notice (if you look at the previous blog) that the collage's name has changed. The original name, Rice Fields, was too similar to the name Gregory Kondos used for a painting (also commissioned by the California Rice Commission) a few years back. I'm nothing if not practical! Also, as I told the Rice Commission folks, this will help me differentiate the Ricelands series in the future..... I'm thinking Ricelands of Indonesia, Chinese Ricelands, Japan's Ricelands,.... You get the idea! I see travels in my future!

Speaking of travels.... Just today I delivered Reflections to the Grange showroom in San Francisco's Showplace Square. It will be part of a "vignette" that will be displayed through "Winter Market". For those of us who are not interior designers, that translates to mid-February.

Madison Range and Rice Fields

Rice Fields is nearing completion. It uses a very different palette from most of my work - much more pastel - and I've been thoroughly enjoying it. I should have it in my studio until Second Saturday in December.

Madison Range will be heading off to Montana at the end of this year, so come by and see it soon.
